Tutorial: How to make a big size Explosion Box Card

I made an Explosion Box Card for my husband- Shashank on his 10th work anniversary! Collected pictures of his 10 years journey at Honeywell and personalized messages from his Honeywell batch mates and teammates. Pasted the pictures on the layers and inserted message tags in a pocket on both the sides. And as a gift, I tucked a Smartwatch in a 'Well' of 'Honey' with a Honeybee (depicting him) hovering over!

Making small box cards is easy but while making a bigger sized one, all the layers need to be cut separately and put together. I added three layers one each side in shades of blue, green and yellow.

Let's start with step by step instructions:

1. Cut a piece of cardstock measuring 7x7 inches for the base.

2. For making the first level layers, cut 4 pieces of 7x8 inches each. Fold at 2 inches at the bottom. The main surface area should be 7x6 inches. I cut 2 pieces in green color and 2 pieces in blue color.

3. Apply glue over 2 inches area of the base cardstock. Paste a 7x8 inches folder paper on one side.

4. Paste all 4 layers on each side.

5. For the second layer cut 4 pieces of 6 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches and for the third layer cut 4 pieces of 6 x 7 1/2 inches. Fold 2 inches of each piece at the bottom which has to be used to paste the layers on the base.

6. Paste the layers on top of each other. Use colors that best complement each other.

7. Below is the picture of 3 layers pasted on top of each other.

8. To cover the middle area, cut a cardstock measuring 7x7 inches.

9. Paste it in the middle of the card over the base.

10. You can make the corners of the layers rounded as it looks neat.

11. Now for the lid of the box, cut cardstock measuring 10x10 inches, fold 1.5 inches on every side. The main surface area should be 7x7 inches. See below picture to get clear picture about the measurements.

12. Cut on 4 sides as shown in above picture and fold the ends inside.

13. Apply glue on the folded part.

14. Paste it and use a clip to secure it. You can remove the clip in couple of hours. It helps the glue strengthen.

15. Use stamps, washi tapes, or any other embellishments of your choice to make the lid look attractive.

16. For making pockets to insert tags, cut piece of cardstock measuring 7 x 3 1/2 inches. Fold 1/2 inch on 3 sides. The main surface area should be 6x3 inches.

17. Cut along the corners in a triangular shape.

18. Paste it on the top layer of the card, it makes a pocket to insert the tags.

19. Cut pieces from printed cardstock to further embellish the layers.

20. Cut tags and punch a hole in each of them, insert a ribbon or thread and knot it.

21. Paste the photographs on each of the layers.

22. Use themed embellishments to further beautify the card.

23. Since my husband works for an IT company called Honeywell, I made a well and pasted it on the base in the middle. The dripping honey from the well was cut using yellow colored paper. The honeybee too I cut using yellow paper and feathers in blue. I tucked in a smartwatch as a gift for him.

24. Also pasted some chocolates and confetti on the base and wrote the sentiment (message) on the base too.

Exploding box card is a good idea to pack a small gift inside rather than gifting in a simple box. It has a big surprise factor!
